IN REALITY

IN REALITY

Have you .. . . .

*ever reached or prayed for something only to find it not there
*ever had dreams that ended in despair
*ever experienced sickness and learned there is no warmth or joy
*had knowledge of adverse thoughts where there is no equality
 *understood suspicion only creates distrust
*ever questioned authority or looked beyond black and white

Accused, abused and torn apart
inspected and dissected without resolution
it’s frailty exposed  .  .  .  for
 healthcare guidelines change
new rules confuse and appear to delude

A change is coming, moving quietly
a disease with no antidote

The roads been traveled,
not to a solution for now skepticism is your mask
suspicion now shines in the eyes of our healers
once the untouchable leaders hiding behind this uncertainty
afraid to speak
struggling both inwardly and out

Little do we know; our caretakers too,
are involved in this plight
between our current
fragmented health care system
we must understand their dilemma
along with our own

To remain quiet, not listen or seek to see
concessions cannot succeed
there’s no winners, only weakness is its aftermath

If the government succeeds
in dismantling delivery of our healthcare
we will be the ones
suffering the aftermath,
and losing the greatest gift of all . . .
our right to the choice of care . ..

The wall of fear, this invisible shield
needs to be challenged again to heal

LOVE

LOVE

In the name of love

truth or lie changes so many lives.

Words of love, devotion and trust

gentle and profound

secrets together buried deep,

inner fortitude so sweet.

Is it a game to end in pain

from right to wrong?

Understand

there’s no winners

the only weakness is it’s aftermath

for

love can be fragile

if misconstrued,

can easily be broken and shattered in two.

Tears fall, motivating fears begin,

For in pain we’re all the same.

Self confidence to a fool.

Will it be seclusion or revenge?

Depends on your mind and the thoughts within.

DESTINY

DESTINY

An unknown fate

wakes the soul.

A lost love fades away,

friendships once strong

now distant and forever gone.

With naivete we think

minds will bend,

will think the same in the end.

Deceiving lies spoken again

breeding seedlings,

waiting still

ready to wake.

Life's not a blackboard continually being erased

So much to lose

what does it take?

SOULS IN MOURNING

SOULS IN MOURNING

Merciless terror
deadly and deep.

Live not in fear?
a disillusion pretense lurks near

Some will their eyes not to see
hoping this endeavor keeps them free.

From shrouded fiends willing to strike will the unwilling, too, be made to fight

The world grieves,
eras
of hatred
never forget

mourn the helpless souls

caught in their tangled web

Envision Peace
Time moves on,
nothing has changed
in a world
unable to communicate.
Eternal fighting, dying,
diverse nations seeking a need,
another time, a different reason.
Dominance remains,
for naïve once so good
now transparent and understood.
Imagine a dream becoming a reality,
the value of it seldom known.
Agree, it's a fallacy and
never will we.

For ever, these hostilities remain
Perspectives need to be viewed
not to agree
but to be feasibly understood.
To envision peace
is easy to do,
becoming reality,
remains an uncertainty.

WITHOUT FEAR OF CONTRADICTION

Without fear of contradiction

under parallel bars that have taught us

to move onward, in the path of prosperity,

as a nation living under our symbol of freedom

symbolizing centuries of  trouble upward

fighting for liberty and humanity

a flag of your fathers, children and children’s children yet unborn

an emblem for all, a perfection;

yet for some it may seem difficult

as cruel injustice still stands between equal rights for everyone

bunting made of red, white and blue

free of  blaspheme and disregard

unashamed to gaze in the arms of serenity

for all the signs and symbols the world has known,

there is none so full of meaning as the

gentle folds of the Flag of our country.

TAPS

Taps

The bugle plays at dawn, the beginning of a new day

fear the bugle mid-day

"Day is done,

Gone the Sun

From the lakes

From the Hills

From the sky

All is well

Safely rest

God is nigh"

S i l e n c e

Make it go away

it’s not the sound one wants to hear

for the weary body is not resting after a grueling day

hush the sound,

make it go away

our brothers and sisters

precious

protected from dangers cast their way,

guarded from sickness,

kisses and love always

made the hurt go away

s i l e n c e t h e b u g l e

"Fading light

Dims the sight

And a star

Gems the sky

Gleaming bright

From afar

Drawing nigh

Falls the night"

you know what it conveys

people are talking

you hear not what they say

the gentle breeze does not free

and the sound is not sweet,

with closed eyes one can I see

the ominous storm that does not leave

bury the bugle , silence the fear

let there be dawn with no ocean of tears

"Thanks and praise.

For our days

Neath the sun

Neath the stars

Neath the sky

As we go

This we know

God is nigh"

The haunting melody, we now know as "Taps" used at military funerals was born

Reportedly , it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing in Virginia . The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land.
During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment.
When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead.
The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army.
The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted.
The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral.
The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate.
But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only one musician.
The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform.
This wish was granted.

THE UNKNOWN'S COVET CLOSE AT HAND

A veil of insecurity passes the day
the unknown’s covet close at hand.

As disconcerting news never ends
safety becomes a guessing game.

The mind is vulnerable and awake,
evening depicts a false calm,
yet, needed rest will not come.

For many, it’s easy to withdraw,
not worry at all,
a travesty to pretend the enemy will go away.

Standing mutely in the shadows
won’t insure our country’s safe,
a deception to believe this instability will fade away.

IT'S WRONG

IT’S WRONG

Naivety against inbred contempt cannot survive.

How do you abort the syndrome inside?

A source of endurance diminishes to stealing,

murder, for survival in a country filled with hatred and war,

or a nation so poor.

Question the reason being dealt such a fate;

endure by any means.

Fate and survival embroils the wrong.

Silent stares, closed doors, lost opportunities

living with disease, being disabled or marred

sense it, taste and feel it, it’s wrong.

Envelope silently sealed, conclusions complete;

ethnic group, residence, monetary position

as deciding factors equals wrong.

Misfortune, just another’s gain,

right or wrong, who decides what’s fair and not?

Justify the wrongs, how can it be done?

Life’s journey sweet or harsh

can never be equal or fair.

It’s  wrong!

Yet, the battle isn’t over;

new days ahead.

Can we repair the destruction done?

MY LIFE WITHOUT YOU

Morning brings no brightness
as darkness gradually fades
happiness has unexpectedly been taken away.
My mind is vulnerable and awake
making decisions you used to make.

So much time has passed,
poignant images
of memories buried deep
once more eradicate needed sleep.

Independent and strong,
blindly not wanting to see
the youth's been waning each time we meet.

Though years have passed
love's agonizing pain is near.
Death's door opened my eyes
you, too, now leave my side.

DARKNESS HAS FALLEN

DARKNESS HAS FALLEN

Darkness has fallen, so many weep

You've been taken away from us

Agonizing pain, love brings

No more hurt will you endure

embrace your loved ones who have been waiting for you

Through the pain and laughter we shared

We always knew you were there

Suddenly, for all you held in your heart
 there is silence

Except the strength of your love

Will never weaken

Until we’re together again

With us, forever you will be

NOW SILENCE

Now Silence

Words of love I thought I knew

but

occupying my mind

are embedded visions

with thoughts of you

Brief encounters

words of love and devotion never spoken

no promises to keep

feelings were always buried deep

These words of love I thought I knew

days scurry by, years past

hurried lifestyle

so much to do, no time to waste

and then along came you

now,  whatever I do,

can’t erase images of you

Precious loving times alone with you

the depth of your eyes looking within

two souls, total abandonment with nothing to hide

such a profound experience for you and I

Mental visions replayed and renewed

a silent picture plays on of you

Words of love I now perceive

for you touched a part of me,

a place no other dared to be

IS THIS THE END?

IS THIS THE END?

 Our existence leads us astray
 centuries on earth
 erroneous footsteps taken
 like quicksand
deeper it goes with little escape
anger fuels deep in the soul
and envy's deceit continues to grow

The yearn for power continues to resurrect
slowly we die in a promised land
 misdeeds seem to escape
 deepening an endless delusion

 Sovereignty so pure
 formation and principles courageously fought
wanting to believe but the apparition continues to grow
leaving in its path a destructive end

The message is clear - can't you hear
a facade of our livelihood for
words and trust have become a delusion
will we let it end..... only to begin again?

THE FALLACY

Concious deception fuels more duplication
In time, fabricating a model of conduct

History demonstrates...
from the turmoil of civil war,
and society's instability
the Roman Empire ruled

Western civilization emerged
born from the Roman rule
across the globe
Socialism's evil decree

Society, dependent on individuals
creating the picture
remains passive
for a time

Stepping stones to a fallacy

Threads of exploitation
thwart and undermine
government's power-
this authority

If citizens permit,
these suppressed feelings
and challenges unmet by society,
continue to grow

Fear what may become,
for
one step at a time
regime's begin

A fallacy,
or a change
if not now, when.

RAISING THE AMERICAN FLAG ON SURABACHI,IWO JIMA [WWII]

This poem reflects the Editor's [Linda Tofanelli] feelings, in poetic form, after reading "Flag of Our Fathers." by James Bradley. Bradley's book is based on the post-war life [WWII] of the US Marines and US Army soldiers who helped raise the American Flag on Mount Surabachi, on the Island of IWO JIMA, after it was taken from the Japanese defenders at a cost of several thousand killed and wounded US Marines and US Army troops.

Mount Suribachi,

Portraying verification of a wrong identity
secrets suppressed now free
a trunk shut tight now open
revealing the truth's inside

This complexity, the invisible line
a need to know what was never told

So long ago .... now brought to life pages of information
absorbed as slowly read
the buried, the burden exposed
to keep quiet, how can it be
not rightly honoring he

All those hurt and dying on soiled land
the battle of Mount Suribachi,
fighting and praying , knowing
the security of peace never again

Feeling the deception, while fighting demons inside
no way to escape ongoing nightmares
happy to be alive, yet the gnawing guilt, why wasn't it I ?

Pray for the boy, the man,
those hero's deserve tribute
In the aftermath of their torment on land
